LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s men's soccer team was unable to sustain a prolific start Sunday afternoon in its final home game of the season.
The Golden Eagles scored twice in the first 20 minutes of the game, but Cal State Monterey Bay rallied to earn a 2-2 tie in a California Collegiate Athletic Association game at Jesse Owens Track. Cal State L.A. (10-5-4, 8-3-2) had already clinched the third seed for next week's CCAA Championship Tournament, but the tie was huge for Cal State Monterey Bay (9-7-3, 6-5-3), which clinched the fourth and final tourney spot with the point.
The tourney field is set with No. 1 Sonoma State facing No. 4 Cal State Monterey Bay and No. 2 Cal State Dominguez Hills facing No. 3 Cal State L.A. The tournament will begin Friday at Cal State Dominguez Hills.
Then Cal State L.A. started Sunday's quickly with
John Massaquoi scoring twice to increase his team-leading goal scoring total to 10. He scored just 2:03 into the game thanks to assists from Marthinsen and
Spencer Tripp. A pass from Tripp to Marthinsen set things up and Marthinsen sent a pass to Massaquoi, who got off a hard from the left side of the box.
Massaquoi struck again in the 20th minute when he used some fancy footwork to elude a pair of defenders and then lined a left-footed bullet into the right corner of the net.
Cal State Monterey Bay, though, struck back quickly to get back in the game. A shot by Nate Toricelli went off the hands of Cal State L.A. goalie
Noe David and past the goal-line to make it 2-1. Kyle Satow was credited with the assist.
The Otters then tied the game two minutes later when Toricelli received a through ball from Andy Breault and came in alone on David. His lofted shot drifted into the upper left corner of the net to tie the game.
Once the game was tied, neither team generated much offense.
Kyle Hewitt got a nice chance early in the second half off a give-and-go with Massaquoi, but Cal State Monterey Bay goalie Brendan Baca made a good save.
Beault got off a strong bid a few minutes later, but David made the save to keep the game tied. Thurston had the best chance of the second half, but his header went off the crossbar and bounced over.
Neither team managed a shot in the two overtime periods.
Cal State L.A. will conclude its regular season on Monday at Cal State San Bernardino.
